Handout – How To Be a Great Mentor

This handout is a supplement to the Mentor Toolkit and reviews some of the core elements of being the type of mentor that can best deliver messages around mindsets.

If mentors are going to be successful in delivering mindset messages and strategies to the youth they serve, they must first lay the foundation for that by building a strong, caring, and mutual mentoring relationship. Mentoring can be applied to many different goals, including growth mindset and academic performance, but that work can't happen if the mentoring relationship is not on solid ground and if the mentor has failed to be seen as someone who is trustworthy, knowledgeable, and caring.

This handout can be used to teach mentors about some of the most critical aspects of how they can support youth and build that strong foundation in their relationship.
